  • Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE)

The Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) credential is the premier certification for professionals who analyze the business requirements and design and implement the infrastructure for business solutions based on the Microsoft Windows® 2000 platform and Microsoft server software.

Choose the MCSE credential if you:

Plan, design, and implement Microsoft Windows server solutions and architectures.

Have at least one year of experience analyzing business and technical requirements, and planning, designing, and implementing solutions with Microsoft products and technologies.

    Job title examples include:

Systems Engineer, Network Engineer, Systems Analyst, Network Analyst, or Technical Consultant.

Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) candidates on the Microsoft Windows® 2000 track are required to pass seven exams or the equivalent that include the following:

      Five Core Exams:

    • Four operating system exams
    • One design exam
    • 2 Elective Exams

    • Two elective exams

The exams provide a valid and reliable measure of technical proficiency and expertise in solution design and implementation. MCSE candidates should also have at least one year of experience implementing and administering a network operating system, implementing and administering a desktop operating system, and designing a network infrastructure.

Core Operating System Exams (four required)

Candidates must pass one exam from each set of operating system exams—client operating system and networking system—in the following table. Candidates can complete the core operating system exams requirement by passing either four Windows 2000 or four Windows XP Professional/.NET Enterprise Server exams or a combination of both.

Exam Title (one required of each set)

Note: Microsoft is integrating Microsoft Windows XP Professional and Microsoft .NET Enterprise Servers exams into the MCSE certification. Candidates should continue to pursue training and certification in Windows 2000, as skills acquired for it remain highly relevant and provide a critical foundation for Windows XP Professional and .NET Enterprise Servers.

MCSEs on the Windows 2000 track will not be required to pass Windows XP Professional/.NET Enterprise Server exams to retain MCSE certification. The Windows 2000 exams and the Windows XP/.NET Enterprise Server exams for the MCSE certification are expected to remain available concurrently.

¹ Alternative to the core client operating system exams is exam 70-240: Microsoft Windows 2000 Accelerated Exam for MCPs Certified on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0. (This exam is no longer available.)
