Linux+ certification to measure foundation-level linux operating system proficiency as a reliable indicator of employee success for both professionals and employers.

The Linux+ certification measures vendor-neutral Linux knowledge and skills for an individual with at least 6 months practical experience. The target market for Linux+ certification is any individual interested in demonstrating fundamental Linux knowledge and skills.

Introduction

The Linux+ Certification is designed to measure the competencies of the Linux Professional with 6 months of experience with the Linux operating system. This person provides basic installation, operation, administration and troubleshooting services for the Linux operating system on workstations and servers.

Also required is the ability to demonstrate basic knowledge of computer hardware

The typical Linux+ Professional performs the following tasks:
  • Describes where Linux+ fits in the market (e.g., firewall, Webserver), how it is used, and explain
    fundamental open source resources and licenses
  • Has basic knowledge of Linux user administration (e.g., adding and deleting users and groups)
    * Understands basic file permissions (e.g., chmod, ls – l) and software configurations
  • Has basic knowledge of managing local storage devices (e.g., mounting, formatting and partitioning and file control)
  • Has basic knowledge of network protocols (TCP/IP)
      • Basic Linux networking commands
      • Set IP address, gateways, and name servers
      • Connect to another machine using TCP/IP (Secure Shell, FTP, Telnet, X-WINDOW,redirect, Samba basics)
  • Installs, verifies, and removes packages and patches
  • Is aware of basic system security procedures and best practices (physical and operating system
    security)
  • Understands the login environment and shell commands
  • Understands services (e.g., xinetd, standalone services such as Apache and Samba, etc/services, inetd, /etc/rc.d, runlevels) Understand processes, process management, and environment
  • Navigates basic file system structure
  • Locates, installs, and configures drivers when new hardware is added
  • Describes the relationships among the various components of the operating system (e.g., kernel vs modules, GUI, Internet connectivity)
  • Understands when and why to recompile the kernel and how to add modulesUse vi basics to edit text files
  • Understands basic Linux printing tasks (lpr, lpq, lprm, cups) including adding, removing, and configuring local and/or remote printers
  • Understands basic troubleshooting techniques (e.g., X-WINDOW, dial-up modems, networking) and uses resources available to support troubleshooting (e.g, manpages, how to, LUG, logfiles)
  • Installs and configures Xfree86 and X-WINDOW on a local system on supported hardware
  • Installs Linux on a local system with supported hardware
  • Navigates a GUI interface running either KDE or GNOME
  • Locates resources on the Internet
  • The recommended experience for Linux+ certification includes:

      6 months of experience with the Linux operating system
      Core hard ware examination from A+ revised for Linux
      Basic computer skills
